SEO is the science and art of preparing a webpage ti achieve high rankings "Search Engine Results Pages" (SERPS). SEO is performed on a website so that by achieving higher SERPS a website recieves more vistors as it is more easily found in the search engine listings. The best SEO is SEO that observes the guidlines set out by thr search engines themselves. This type of SEO is called "White Hat SEO"

SEO is used to attain what are called "Natural" or Organic" search results. Natural/Organic search results are the results achieved by using SEO to target specific keywords and keyword phrases that a searcher types into a search engines search field in order to find what they are looking for.

SEO is mostly about text content and the use of the targeted keywords and phrases in the body of a web page and in various important parts of said web page. The most imporant of these spcific places is in a web pages "Title" or "Title Tag". This title is what appears in the title bar when you look at the screen of your computer.

SEO involves things that are part of a web pages coding and structure as well as the all important text content. There is a famous saying on the internet "Content is King" this has been said since the early days of the net and is as true today as it was then and it is set to continue that way for the forseeable future. One of the main reason for this is because the search engines use words to find web pages that correspond to the wrods typed by the users of the search engines.

In SEO as content is King presentation is contents queen. A well presented website with good easily navigatable construction is also a part of SEO and helps to achieve the results that a person sets out to achive using SEO.

By incoporating SEO into a websites design and development you are assuring your website has a much better chance of being found. Some people regard PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising as SEO but to my mind that is a different aspect as PPC is not using on site SEO implentation to gain proper natural/organic search results. Link building is also regarded by some to be a part of SEO but again I regard SEO as on site hands on incorporation of SEO tactics.

SEO is a skill that is partly the science of following the guidelines set out by the search engines which in turn makes there job easier and incuding the basic principles of SEO into a web page but SEO is also a lot about flair and intuition. It takes someone with a natural ability to know what reads well and yet contains a happy medium of keywords and keyword phrases within the text content to attain the best balance when it comes to SEO.
